About Communipaw Avenue Block Association

The Communipaw Avenue Block Association was formed in October of 2000, by concerned neighbors; Rosalyn Browne, Jennie Little, Elizabeth Ski Garnes, Anna McClain, Edith Smith, Marie Felder, Gladys Price,
Gloria Felder & the late Beatrice Rainey. As neighbors we had been complaining about the pervasive drug-trafficking on every corner in Lafayette, violent crime associated with that activity, vacant garbage ridden lots and houses, filthy streets and a dilapidated Webb Park located in front of Webb School and Monumental Baptist Church. Webb Park was named in honor of Rev. Dr. Ercel F. Webb, a visionary pastor of Monumental Baptist Church for 42 years. Webb organized monthly park clean up activities for church members. Descent families, particularly children were unable to use the park due to drug addicts needles and broken liquor bottles in the park. Most individual neighbor complaints regarding these conditions were not addressed by adminstration officials, but when CABA (the group) addressed these conditions in a weekly meeting with the Jersey City Police Narcotics Squad and JC officials we were heard. In 2001 when Glenn Cunningham was elected he encouraged CABA to create a Webb Park Master Plan Renovation, which we completed with the assistance of Dr. Clifford Waldman (Friends of Van Vorst Park Association). Waldman's group is credited with creating the community driven Master Plan Renovation for Van Vorst Park. Marie and Rosalyn consulted with Waldman frequently who became our mentor and friend !  We worked with the JC Division of Architecture, planned the Grand Opening Ceremony and were overjoyed when the park reopened in July of 2004. Today CABA members work diligently to maintain Webb Park as a place of peace for all visitors, particularly children. Annual events include the Christmas Trim A Tree Ceremony for Webb School students held in December prior to Christmas, Lafayette History Festival & Tour, held in May & Webb Park Planting Day, held in June. CABA's ongoing project; Glenn D. History Trail in Webb Park, will feature Lafayatte Legends, who have played a significant role in the development of Webb Park , and improving the quality of life for residents throughout the last one hundred years. CABA is a proud member of the Jersey City Parks Coalition, a non profit twelve member group, whose members take care of their individual neighborhood parks, formed by Dr. Clifford Waldman, and the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy, a non profit organization that promotes historic preservation, formed by John Gomez.
CABA is dedicated to restoring Lafayette to a clean, healthy, safe and drug-free environment.
